Qixuan Lim is a 27-year-old multimedia illustrator and sculptor. She was raised in Singapore and currently lives in the Netherlands. She works as a designer by day and an artist by night. Lim learned to sculpt five years ago. In her sculptures, she creates tension between the real and imagined. Her aesthetic has been shaped by fantasy stories, old curiosities, time travel and make-believe.
She has always been fascinated by morbid curiosities and science fiction. Her fixation on baby heads and other body parts are out of a fasciation towards flesh and skin. Her creations manage to be gross and creepy in an adorable manner. She believes that baby heads help her achieve the balance of horror and cuteness. Babies are seen vulnerable and fragile to the world, but Lim enjoys putting the babies in a different context which may be repulsive.
Lim sculpts her pieces using polymer clay and a mix of colors such as red and beige. She uses those colors specifically to achieve the transparency of human skin and flesh. She uses powders and soft tools such as needles, brushes and a magnifying glass to sculpt her pieces. Additionally, most of her pieces are baked in the oven.
All of her pieces are often bite-sized and is often describe as “creepy-cute.” She gets inspiration from weird conversations and pop-surrealist painter Mark Ryden and enjoys the aesthetics of Wes Anderson films.
